How it works ?

STAROS Search is a revolutionary semantic search engine, powered by artificial intelligence, designed to facilitate your research in spectroscopy. Whether you are an astronomy professional, a student, or an enthusiast, this interface allows you to easily access a wealth of spectroscopic data.

A Rapidly evolving tool

Although this new application is a relatively new and still developing tool, it is evolving quickly. We are tirelessly working to expand its capabilities and features to better meet your spectroscopic research needs.

Current features

Currently, this interface offers you the ability to:

  • Access all data from various STAROS observation campaigns.
  • Access the professional spectroscopic database Melchiors.

Where to start?

Using STAROS Search is simple, you just have to ask what you want. Here are some example commands you can use:

STAROS
  • all alphadra staros datas or all alpha draconis staros spectra: Displays all STAROS data related to the Alpha Draconis observation campaign.
  • all 10 lac staros datas: Displays all STAROS data related to the Alpha Draconis observation campaign.
Note than "all staros datas" prompt is not accepted for limited amount of datas. But, if you are logged in with your STAROS account, you can consult all your datas without limitations:

  • Show me all my staros datas : Displays all your STAROS datas, from all observation campaigns.
  • I want to see all my alphacyg staros spectra: Displays your specific STAROS datas for the Alpha Cygni campaign..
Melchiors
  • I want to see all Melchiors stars : Displays the list of all stars in Melchiors database.
  • Melchiors list : You can also juste type quick command for show all stars in Melchiors database.
  • Melchiors HD 114710 : Displays the spectrum of Thuban from the Melchiors database.
  • I want to see Melchiors 10 lac: Displays the spectrum of 10 Lacertae from the Melchiors database.

For optimal search, it is recommended to use the HD names of objects, for example: Show me Melchiors HD 214680 for 10 lacertae.

How to access STAROS datas

This semantic search engine can give you access to all the data for the various STAROS camps in progress, as well as those that have already been completed. Let's see how.

Opening data

Each STAROS campaign makes available all the data deposited by astronomers (you!). The exposure of this data is made possible by so-called APIs.

API

These APIs are data consultation interfaces designed for computer processing. In other words, all STAROS data can be retrieved by you without going through the graphical database interface. This means you can manipulate and process the data with a small Python script, for example, or any other computer language. And what's possible for you, is also possible for STAROS :)

General data queries

If each database can be consulted via these APIs, this also means that they can all be consulted at the same time! Thanks to this mechanism, you can consult all STAROS data for each observation campaigns, but you can also request to see only your own data, if you are connected.

What is Melchiors database ?

This STAROS search engine can give you innovative access to the Melchiors Database spectra with preparation of spectra for your common software (ISIS, VSpec, SpecINTI, Demetra..).

The Challenge of Instrumental Response (IR):

In the STAROS campaign, astronomers often faced difficulties in calculating and applying the correct instrumental response to spectra. These challenges arise from methodological issues or the choice of reference stars. IR is crucial as it helps to understand how an instrument alters the observed data, thereby obtaining accurate information about the studied stars.

The Solution: The Melchiors Database

The Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma, with its 1.2 m Mercator telescope, has launched the Melchiors project, a revolutionary initiative in the world of astronomy.

Features of Melchiors:

  • High Resolution: With a resolution of R=85,000, Melchiors provides a very high precision, enabling detailed and accurate analyses.
  • Wide Range of Wavelengths: The coverage from 3900 Å to 9000 Å ensures a comprehensive study of the stellar spectrum, from O stars to M.
  • Data Quality: The spectra are carefully processed, ensuring their reliability and precision.

Impact on Spectrography

The Melchiors database is a game-changer in spectrography. The concerns of finding suitable reference stars for low or high spectral resolution work are now a thing of the past. This resource is a treasure for astronomers, greatly facilitating the understanding and analysis of stellar spectra.
